Saṃjñā – signals

«Subala’s friendship:“Mādhava discussed topics full of allusions difficult to understand by others with Subala, since Subala was most expert among all the friends in grasping Kṛṣṇa’s hints.”» (Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, 3.3.47).

A saṃjñā is a “suggestion”, a “signal” or “sign” or even a “gesture”. In the ancient Vyakarana school of Sanskrit grammar it was a technical term. It indicated a short formulation to convey a broader meaning, often related to the general nature of things.

Krishna’s suggestions are not so immediate to grasp, because the Divine helps man in his realization, but man can understand it only if he carries out his intelligence, sensitivity and wisdom, as Subala did.
