Dhri – holding the reins
«The definition of dharanā refers to the stability of concentration, immobile as a mountain, which is not affected by the ego, mental agitation and duality» (Annapurna Upanishad, 1.49).
The term dharanā derives from the verb dhri which has several meanings including: “to be or to exist, to live, to continue to live, to survive, to be maintained or preserved, to remain, to continue or to resolve”; “Hold, endure, carry, support, maintain”; “Keep under control, brake, hold, stop”; “Observe, practice”. It is a verb that is also used in the images of “holding the reins”.
You want to rest Libra and it’s understandable. You will feel like you can enjoy little of this summer and always have to work. Take a few moments, especially around mid-August, just to calm the soul and not increase irritability. But try not to give up the reins entirely if you can, it is a crucial year for you to define who you are and what you want and therefore you need discipline.
IN PRACTICE
Vriksha-āsana, tree pose
This position represents the perfect middle way between staying focused and at the same time staying calm, well planted on the ground, without agitation or tension. Practice it every day for one minute per side.
Awareness exercise
Whenever you feel tired or irritable, think about the tree-pose, what you feel when you do it and try to feel the same sensations. If you can, perform the āsana in that same moment, otherwise do it only mentally.
Mantra of the month
«Loose reins, but under control».
