Citra – the great picture
«Citra said: I bow down to Lord Bhāskara, the master of the firmament. He is the primordial Lord, the Lord of the universe, the destroyer of sins and ailments». (Skanda Purana, 1.139.9).
The word citra has many meanings in ancient India. For astronomy it indicates a particular point of the lunar passage, but it also means “the bright” and is associated with the divinity known as Tvaṣṭā (God of drawing). In the theater it means “portrait” and has to do with various parts of the plot, but it indicates also the metrics of certain instruments. It concerns a particular method of measurement which intertwine architecture with astrology and which determines whether the construction is a good omen. In music and poetry it concerns metrics. As a general term citra means “drawing” and given its link with the many fields of life, it can also refer to the great cosmic design.
